CPD Deadline Looming: What You Need to Do

Published on 14 March 2016

Let's face it: It is hard to keep track of the CPD requirements and what is required of practitioners each CPD year. Lucky for you, Insights has provided an overview of what you should know as the 2015/16 CPD year comes to a close.

New South Wales and Victoria

On 1 July 2015 the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) rules changed and the Legal Profession Uniform Law is now in effect for legal practitioners in New South Wales and Victoria. Most practitioners still need to complete 10 units of CPD each year.

The significant changes are:

  • All increments of CPD will no longer be in MCLE/CPD points or hours, everything is now referred to as CPD units. One hour equals one CPD unit.
  • In NSW there are no longer Rule 57 and Regulation 176 requirements. There are now four areas in which practitioners must complete at least one each CPD unit per year:
    • Ethics and professional responsibility
    • Practice management and business skills
    • Professional skills
    • Substantive law

Queensland

Queensland practitioners must complete at least one unit of CPD in each of the following areas:

  • Ethics and professional responsibility
  • Practice management and business skills
  • Professional skills

What you can do

We recommend confirming your requirements with your Law Society/Institute, but the College does offer a range of solutions to help you complete your yearly requirements.

  • Attend face-to-face seminars – available in Sydney
  • Complete your CPD Online, at anytime from your desk
  • Attend a Live Webinar from your desk

Remember to plan ahead and feel free to get in touch with cpd@collaw.edu.au if you have any questions.

As claiming CPD units is self-regulatory, we recommend you contact your law society to verify what is required of you.
