Whether you’re studying or have already completed your law degree, you may still be mulling over where you’d like your career to go. And that’s okay. But doing the PLT is a good idea regardless. Here’s why.
1. Keeps your options open
There’s no getting around it: you must complete your PLT if you want to be a lawyer in Australia.
So if there’s even a small chance you might want to practise law in the future, it’s worth getting it under your belt now – alongside your peers – so it doesn’t delay you later. There’s nothing worse than being poised to apply for a job before realising you don’t have the qualifications.
Save your future self the hassle and get it out of the way!
2. No re-taking university subjects
Most states around Australia have a 5-year ‘stale law’.
In other words, if you don’t get admitted within 5 years of finishing your law degree, you run the risk of having to re-do some of your university subjects should they become outdated (due to changes in legal practice).
Completing your PLT early prevents your qualifications from becoming stale, saving you the cost, time and stress of returning to uni! (And let’s be honest: who’d want to repeat Torts?)
3. Prepares you for other careers
You don’t have to become a solicitor to make use of your PLT. Having a sound understanding of the way lawyers work can be beneficial in all sorts of jobs.
Remember, your PLT will arm you with many transferable skills that are relevant to all sorts of roles. Critical thinking, communication and interview skills, to name a few.
The College’s PLT graduates have gone on to work in many related careers such as legal operations, government, politics, alternative dispute resolution, teaching and research.
4. Enhances your resume
You never know what doors will open for you as a qualified lawyer.
Completing your PLT and getting admitted demonstrates tremendous hard work and determination – qualities every employer values.
Whether or not you pursue a career in law, the PLT will look impressive on your resume.
5. Marks a personal milestone
Completing your PLT and becoming a qualified lawyer is a significant achievement. One that’s sure to instil you with a sense of accomplishment and pride – no matter where your career takes you.
So, why wait?
Embrace the wider opportunities PLT offers and set yourself on a path towards success and personal fulfilment.
