Alexandra Brand became a lawyer for reasons similar to so many lawyers - she wasn’t great at the sight of blood. Insights spoke to Alexandra, now a Senior Associate for a Melbourne law firm, about what she does as a lawyer, what she finds most rewarding about her work, and why she chose to further studies in legal business to broaden and deepen her knowledge of the business side of legal practice.
No blood and gore for a life in law
At a formative age, Alexandra’s father presented her with two career paths: doctor or lawyer.
“I don’t go well with seeing blood or gore, so law was the path for me!” said Alexandra. Her love of reading, and her naturally analytical and systematic approach set her off in her career in law.
“Once I started my degree, I began to explore different areas in which to work,” said Alexandra. “The two that stood out most to me was criminal prosecution and family law. I now work in family law.”
Alexandra graduated as The College’s Best Graduating Student in her LLM (Applied Law) majoring in Family Law and works in private practice, in a law firm based in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
“I predominantly work in family law, though I also have a few files in intervention order matters and conveyancing,” explained Alexandra. “Family law is litigious, and our schedules are very much controlled by the Court. Therefore, you cannot plan every day. This brings challenges in itself. Sometimes, you just have to work in the evening to get on top of your work or meet filing deadlines. That does not bother me so much.”
Don’t stress over what you can’t control
Like many lawyers, Alexandra is well versed in the “juggling techniques” required to manage a thriving career in law and parenting two children under three.
“I love my job and I love my children, so I try not to stress over things you can’t control,” she said. “I’m only one of two people in my office who have children under 18, so we discuss juggling techniques.”
As a lawyer, the most rewarding part of Alexandra’s work is getting outcomes for people.
“Our job as lawyers is to advise and achieve the best we can for our clients, within the parameters of the law and precedent,” said Alexandra. “I enjoy building relationships with my clients and guiding them through the family law process.”
Understanding law as a business
As Alexandra progressed through her career, she recognised she needed to have more than a solid practical knowledge of the law to be a good lawyer.
“The College’s Legal Business subjects have assisted me to understand the business of law,” said Alexandra. “Once you get to a certain level in your career, it is not just about servicing clients, but beginning to think about running the business that services your clients. At a senior associate level and above, it is important that we have knowledge of marketing, pricing, business strategy, and so on. This helps us manage the junior lawyers under us, but also helps us know how to run our legal practice.”
For lawyers exploring further study in legal business, Alexandra is encouraging.
“I say, keep an open mind. I never studied any type of business subjects before completing my legal business subjects. It was challenging, but I enjoyed learning, and it was quite interesting to see how much of it relates to your day-to-day practice.”
