For nearly a decade, Senior Associate Chelsea Baker has built a career in succession law, guiding clients through complex estate matters.
But with a desire to step into leadership, she knew she needed more than legal expertise. So she enrolled in the College of Law’s Legal Practice Management Course (LPMC) – and found everything she needed to make it happen.
Our thanks to Chelsea for sharing her story.
Learning to lead
Over the past nine years, I’ve been fortunate to work at top-tier firms, building my expertise in succession law and learning from some of Australia’s leading accredited specialists. Their mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my practice.
But last year, I started thinking about how I could take my career to the next level.
I knew I wanted to step into leadership, grow my profile and give back to the profession. I was also keen to learn how to mentor younger lawyers and help them with their career development, just as my mentors had done for me.
I knew that by identifying gaps in my skill set and strengthening them, I could provide more holistic guidance to the next generation of legal professionals.
That led me to the Legal Practice Management Course (LPMC). I saw it as the best way to boost my leadership skills, gain new insights into how a firm is run and connect with other lawyers with similar goals.
Finding the right provider
When I started looking into LPMC providers, I was drawn to the College of Law because my colleagues who studied there spoke so highly of their experience. I knew the lecturers were well-regarded in the profession, and the course was renowned for being interactive and practical.
But what confirmed my decision was the support I received from the beginning. During the initial intake process, the team really took the time to ask questions and understand what I wanted to get out of the course.
They were approachable and responsive and seemed genuinely invested in helping me achieve my goals. That level of support and guidance made it clear I was in the right place.
The business of law
The LPMC was exactly what I needed to prepare for the next stage of my career.
As a solicitor, you’re very focused on client work and providing services. But this course reframed my thinking – it opened my eyes to the bigger picture of how a law firm operates.
One of the biggest takeaways was how every decision in a firm, from financial planning to workflow management, impacts its overall success.
I now have a clearer grasp of what it takes to lead, not just as a lawyer but as someone responsible for the growth and sustainability of a practice.
Turning knowledge into action
What I valued most about the course was its real-world focus.
We didn’t just discuss theory – we were encouraged to apply what we learned directly to our own workplaces.
So, while I gained insights into the inner workings of a law firm that would benefit me as a future leader, I also came away with practical strategies I could implement in my practice straight away.
For example, when preparing my business plan as part of the main assessment, I had to think about client retention and satisfaction, brand development and the financial aspects of running a firm.
This pushed me to apply critical thinking and consider how each element of law firm management work together. This perspective has really enhanced my approach to practice since.
The module on legal technology also proved useful. I’ve always considered myself fairly tech-savvy, but this module completely shifted my understanding of how tools like AI and legal software can enhance efficiency and service delivery.
Since completing the course, I’ve implemented Miro Dashboard in my workplace to create easy-to-follow workflows for case management. The AI functionality allows me to set parameters and generate structured processes automatically, saving time and improving consistency.
An interactive learning experience
As someone with years of study under my belt, I thought I knew what to expect from an online course. But the LPMC exceeded my expectations.
I imagined I’d just be sitting in front of a screen, but it was so much more interactive and engaging than that. We tackled real-world legal challenges and did problem-solving exercises in break-out discussions with other legal professionals.
These conversations were invaluable, exposing me to different perspectives on firm management and leadership that I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise. We discussed everything from how we run our teams and delegate work to which case management systems we use to improve efficiency.
Even though the course was online, it still felt like a good place to share ideas and network with like-minded people.
Stepping into leadership
After completing the LPMC, I feel more prepared than ever to take on a leadership role.
I’m really looking forward to mentoring early-career lawyers and contributing to my firm in a way that extends beyond legal expertise.
The course gave me the tools to lead with confidence – whether that’s enhancing collaboration, boosting productivity, making strategic decisions or helping create a more efficient and supportive workplace.
For anyone considering the LPMC, I’d say this: if you’re serious about leadership, this course gives you the knowledge, skills and confidence to take that next step.
